Close together. Worth slowing down.
Two places to understand Goleta a little better: Rancho La Patera & Stow House, and neighboring Lake Los Carneros.

Stow House: more than a pretty porch.
The Goleta Valley Historical Society dates Stow House to about 1872. Its walking guide connects the house, gardens and ranch buildings with the valley’s agricultural past, including commercial lemon growing and irrigation.
The grounds tell a wider story, too. The guide describes the bunkhouse and the Chinese immigrant workers who lived in rooms once attached to the house. Give the supporting buildings some attention alongside the main residence.
Start here: 304 N. Los Carneros Road, Goleta. Check the Historical Society for tour hours, special events and access details.

Lake Los Carneros: the landscape has a backstory.
The Historical Society describes pathways, native birds and wildlife at the adjoining preserve. Its guide identifies the lake’s earlier name as Stow Pond. Pair the ranch visit with time outdoors, following posted access and trail notices.
Our take
This is the kind of local outing worth keeping in your back pocket: history and open space together, with room to notice something different on a return visit.
Read the deeper story.
Edhat’s history feature traces the lake’s ranching past and the community struggle over development and public access. It adds context to a place that can otherwise look like it has always been here just as it is.
